Description

Within California, USA, there is grass-roots movement supporting the prohibition of plastic bags and a search for alternative production or carrier products. Traditional indigenous knowledge can provide alternative solutions. This initiative involves reuse, waste separation, and recycling. It can reduce marine litter or plastic pollution through the creation of enabling conditions, waste reduction, and prevention of loss to the environment. This initiative could be applied on a national scale. This type of initiative is increasing in use/uptake.

 In particular to indigenous knowledge and methods as an alternative solution, the most important barrier to the (large-scale) implementation or expansion is the lack of protection of traditional indigenous knowledge as intellectual property, lack of knowledge transfer and, competition with modern practices. The steps/support that is necessary to increase the use of indigenous knowledge as alternative solutions in the wider population is dedicated funding, protection of traditional indigenous knowledge as intellectual property, adequate knowledge transfer, reduce competition with modern practices, and showcasing of successes.
